Day 1 (28/5) - Electric Buggy Ride Through Hanoi Old Quarters

What is Hanoi Old Quarters?

Located in the middle of Ha Noi, a rapidly developing city where changes take place every hour, Ha Noi Old Quarter with its old-styled narrow streets full of antique brick houses seems to nostalgically resist the flow of time while still actively trying to adapt to the dynamic atmosphere of the modern city.

Once a bustling area where merchants and artisans gathered to sell their products, Ha Noi Old Quarter consists of many small, meandering streets, each bears the name of the goods that was specifically traded there such as Hang Bac (Silver Product), Hang Ma (Paper Product), Hang Go (Wood Product), just to name a few.

Sit tight and buckle up!
Ready.. Go!

    Booklet:
1.Observe the Old Quarters. What are some of the buildings and landmarks that you can see?

Some of the buildings and landmarks found on the Hanoi Old Quarters are the Colonial architectures, preserved shop houses, Hanoi's largest market and the National Museum of Vietnamese Architecture.

2.What are some of the most interesting things that you see about the Old Quarters?

Some of the interesting things that we saw and observed are there are a lot of shop houses and the roads are overpacked with motorbikes, scooters and bicycles.

3.Suggest reasons why it is important to conserve these heritage sites.

They are opposing forces. Vietnam, compared to Singapore that chose development over historical conservation for the betterment of the country, chose heritage conservation over development as these holds a lot of historical values for the next generation to see. Another factor may be due to the fact that Singapore has limited space and resources which means that these has to be maximised.

    Reflection:

    a) How has the activity led to a change in our attitude about Singapore?

As we walk through the streets of Hanoi, difficulties arose such as the weather (it was raining heavily), the traffic and narrow roads were encountered. We were frightened and scared as we had to cross roads where there is a lot of vehicles and had to walk on paths where motorbikes also took. Through this experience, we realized how lucky we are to live in Singapore where it is safe and modernized. Now, we appreciate Singapore transport system better and we realise that we have effective government.

    b) What are the good practices that we learned?

We must always follow our teachers’ instructions and be more appreciative about the safety in Singapore. We are also lucky that we live in Singapore that is safe and clean, unlike Vietnam, which is more unsafe. We should be more appreciative of our surroundings and be more alert, and walk faster. This is because there are always a lot of cars in Vietnam.

c)From this activity, what and how can we contribute to Singapore?

We can help to create awareness, and that we should be more appreciative about being lucky in Singapore. We can also feel the historical value while walking through the streets of Hanoi. The houses look old but held a lot of heritage. We think that Singapore should also be have places where in the next generation can have a glimpse of the past.
