Day 2 (29/5) - Vietnam History Museum and Army Museum

Vietnam History Museum

Vietnam History Museum lies silently on the back of the renowned Hanoi Opera House, at No.1 Pham Ngu Lao Street, Hoan Kiem District. This museum was built in 1926 under the name Louis Finot Museum by the Ecole Française d’Extreme-Orient and finish in 1932. After being taken over by Vietnamese Government, the museum changed its official name to Museum of Vietnam History and opened to the public on 3 September 1958.

Vietnam Military Museum
Easy to spot thanks to a large collection of weaponry at the front, the Military Museum displays Soviet and Chinese equipment alongside French- and US-made weapons captured during years of warfare. The centrepiece is a Soviet-built MiG-21 jet fighter, triumphant amid the wreckage of French aircraft downed at Dien Bien Phu, and a US F-111.

1.Based on your experience at the Historical Museum and Singapore’s National Museum, fill up the table below:

The museums in Vietnam are not really accessible as we need a car, bus or taxi to reach as there isn't any public buses or MRTs reaching right at the doorstep.
In Singapore at least there is an MRT near it or at least within walking distance. In Singapore at least most museums are air-conditioned. However, in Vietnam, not all museums are air-conditioned.

For the exterior, the museums in Singapore are very nice and attractive. However in Vietnam the exterior is very old.

    Reflection:

    a) How has the activity led to a change in our attitude about Singapore?

We feel that as Singaporeans we should appreciate what we have and not take what we have for granted. We also feel that it is eye-opening to learn about the history of Vietnam, and how it differs greatly from Singapore’s own history, although we are in the same region and very near each other. Also, in Singapore, we have good facilities everywhere, like air-conditioned museums, but in Vietnam, we do not have these luxuries everywhere.

    b) What are the good practices that we learned?

We feel that museums are always being located in a convenient place. However, in Vietnam, these museums may not be accessible very easily via public transport. Hence, when we alight the bus, it is often at the main road. So we learned to be move quicker and be more aware of our surroundings.

c)From this activity, what and how can we contribute to Singapore?

At first, I had high expectation about the museums in Vietnam but it turned out differently. I was also shocked about a lot of people queueing up to go into the museum and the queue was terribly long. We can thus contribute to Singapore by encouraging more people to visit the museum. By doing so, we can educate more people to be more appreciative about the historical experiences of Singapore.
