Day 2 (29/5) - Bat Trang Pottery Village

Located in an area rich in clay, the village has advantage of ingredients to create fine ceramics. Moreover, lying besides the Red river, between Thang Long and Pho Hien, two ancient trade centers in the north of Vietnam during 15th-17th century, Bat Trang’s ceramics were favorite products not only in domestic market, but also foreign ones thanks to Japan, Chinese and Western trading boats that were passing by.

Visiting Bat Trang, tourists can take a walk or join a buffalo tour for sightseeing and shopping. Besides many ceramic stores along the road in the village, tourists should visit Bat Trang Porcelain and Pottery Market where they can directly make pottery products by themselves. Many youngsters and foreign tourists are interested in in this pottery- making experience, and spend a whole day in the market to make a gift for family or friends

Concentrating hard on painting!

Not as easy as it looks!

    Booklet:
    1. What are some of the ceramic products that are produced in Bat Trang?

We produced cups, bowls, plates and ashtrays

    2. Who do you think are the main customers of these products? Why do you think so?

The main customers of these products are people who are interested in ceramic utensils and art. It is because these ceramic products can be moulded and painted into the beautiful ceramic products that are pleasing to the eye and easy to use.

    Reflection:

    a) How has the activity led to a change in our attitude about Singapore?

Ceramic making and molding the clay activity is quite tedious to do and it takes a lot of skills. This made us realise that it takes a lot of effort and time to create simple artwork. Hence, we need to appreciate what we have in Singapore because we simply just buy these items off the shelf and do not have to create the artwork ourselves. It also shows that we need to be more patient on whatever we do not only in Vietnam but also bring the attitude back to Singapore.

    b) What are the good practices that we learned?

From the pottery activity, we learn not to give up. We can apply this value to our studies or whatever we do . We should not give up on what we started on, what we did till halfway we should continue till the end. Another good practice is to ask when you need help, keeping quiet will not help we would need to speak up so to understand what we do not.

    c) From this activity, what and how can we contribute to Singapore?

We can contribute to Singapore by appreciating what we have be contented with what we have . We need to put effort in what we do. However, we should not waste anything but use what we have and save the environment.
