Day 3 (30/5) - Service-Learning at Tru G Tam Bao Tro Xa Hoi Orphanage

Tru G Tam Bao Tro Xa Hoi Orphanage is where many children have either been abandoned or brought to the centre because their parents are unable to provide for them. We visited this centre to perform our service-learning. Not only that, it is pertinent that these children know that despite their circumstances, they are valued, greatly loved, cherished and that they can have hope for a bright future.

At the orphanage, our student volunteers are assigned to different jobs and tasks, such as assisting the local staff in playing games with children, teaching them English, dance, music, arts and other activities. Not only that, they also helped to clean the premise as well as cooked for the orphans.

If i was born in vietnam orphanage, i think i will be someone who appreciate more of what i have. Presently, i am from a normal family. Therefore, i can get most of the things i want. But if i were a orphan, i couldnt get what i want. I will need to wait until some people donate. So, i would be different in my personality.

If the Vietnamese orphans come to our school in Singapore, i think they will be amazed. The reason is that Singapore is a very clean country and the environment is also healthy. I think they would like being in our school due to our modern environment and a developed school.

If i were to go to the orphanage, i will feel a bit dissapointed because i am used to studying in a modern school with good facilities. I am not sure if i am able to adjust my way of life to suit the environment in the orphanage. Hence, I am very thankful to where I am right now.

  2. There is a need to be appreciative in every aspect of life in Singapore.

After visiting the orphanage, I realise most of our needs are already met...from proper water piping system to clean sanitation. When I rendered my help in cleaning up the rooms at the orphanage, I realised that some taps were not working. However, we rarely see this occuring in Singapore.

There were also many mosquitoes in the orphanage restrooms which made it difficult for us to do our job. Hence, I appreciate our living conditions more in Spore after going having seen how the conditions are in Vietnam.

If i were to study in Vietnam, I would need to know people there and make friends with them to help me around studying in Vietnam.

  3. If I were an orphan in Vietnam, I would experience different levels of exposure to the outside world. In Singapore, there is a lot of opportunities available for students to be exposed to globalisation. For example, the exchange programmes or school trips such as the cultural immersion trip which I am going through presently. These overseas learning journeys give us a golden opportunity to understand and learn other countries culture and way of life.

If I had to go to school in Vietnam, I would miss the comfort and high standard of living such as in Singapore. Unlike Spore, the tap water in Vietnam is not for consumption. Hence, facilities and amenities available here would be greatly missed

The visit to the VPV orphanage made me realize how lucky I am to be born in a complete family - to be born with parents who chose to raise me up no matter how tough it may be. I might not have the most fortunate family out there yet I consider myself one for having parents who were willing to undergo through the troubles they might have encountered in raising me up.

From this visit, I learnt to be more appreciative of what I have especially my family. Not everyone have the luxury to be born in a complete family and therefore we should appreciate and cherish them more.

In my opinion, we should share this experience to Singaporeans so as to open their eyes on how fortunate they are to be born in a family that gives everything to them and a country that is willing to provide and sustain their needs.

I think that i am blessed with very good parents. They treat me with a lot of care and concern. Although sometimes i am scolded by them, they will still treat me good.

I learnt that we must treasure what we have and think that our parents are always the best. Even if we are in the same state as them we must continue to live on and don't think that it is the end of the world.

I can contribute by helping the orphanages in
Singapore by doing volunteer work. For example, we can help those in need by helping to teach, cook and taking care of them. I will also tell all parents if i have a chance to tell them that they should not put their children in the orphanage unless they are in dire strait.

I felt that we would need to appreciate what we have . I feel proud that i could teach one of the kids there how to play pick up sticks. In turn, and he taught us how to dance . I feel proud that as a Singaporean, I am able to do my part in contributing my service to an orphanage in Vietnam.

I have also learnt that we need to appreciate what we have now. Through my activities with the orphans in Vietnam, I have learnt to be more confident in my interaction with people who are less fortunate.

From this experience, I will contribute to Spore by volunteering to help the local orphanages, elderly center or more. I can volunteer and help by doing services for them by helping with their needs.

I felt that it is a great achievement for me today as it is my first time delivering service-learning on an international platform. I enjoyed capturing those moments of my friends interacting with the orphans. It is indeed a very good and memorable experience for me.

I have learnt to help the unfortunate who need more than us and how to handle orphans. I appreciate life more as I realised that we are more fortunate than others.

I hope that I can contribute by travelling more to less developed countries. If i have a chance, I would like to do voluntary work to help the needy and the poor.

I feel that I'm very fortunate that i have a good environment in Singapore and our education system is better. And we should appreciate what we have now.

I also feel very fortunate to have my parents with me and the care and support that they have given me.
I learnt to be appreciative of what we have and I also learn that we should not take things for granted as not every fortunate as us.

I will encourage the students in Singapore to be more appreciative and not to complain a lot. We should also be grateful about what we already have and not complain about what we don't have.

I feel bad that some of the orphans there were borned and raised there. There is some who were sent there even though they have parents. I now feel very appreciative of my parents for raising me and all the hard work they did to keep a shelter above my head. I also feel lucky that I was born in Singapore with a family who are able to support me.

Even though I am unable to interact with the orphans due to language barrier , I still tried my best to play with them. For example , I played with some of them chapteh and coloring the book. I find that even though I was not able to interact with them , I still made an effort to play with them.

I would like to contribute my service in Spore by visiting the orphanage and help the orphans there to feel like they are no different than us. I can also do voluntary work in the orphanage to help the orphans.

  10. I feel lucky to be living in Singapore and to be birthed to my parents as the people in the orphanage have to live in worse conditions than Singapore and that I have loving parents who can and are able to take care of me.I also feel grateful to live in Singapore as Singapore is very comfortable compared to Vietnam.

I have learnt that I am very lucky compared to people in Vietnam in terms of living conditions and good facilities. By helping to peel the shells of a big basket of quail eggs, I have learnt to persevere through daily challenges.

I feel that I can contribute to Singapore in terms of how to communicate to people of different generations, upbringing and languages.

I feel that appreciation should be the biggest part of our life. We should appreciate our parents, friends and also our modern society. Our parents work really hard in order to support us and provide all our needs so that we could be happy and shower us with love. There are times where all of us come to the peak of anger and upset towards our parents and we vent it out on them.

The orphanage that we visited consists of children of young age and abandoned elderlies. There were various reasons of why they were left there as their family could not afford to take care of them. However, we can see high perseverance beneath those smiling faces and never see any disgruntled.

I found that Vietnam evolves the culture of the young and old generation. The only way to enable communication with each other is to connect them. Though both parties are living under the same roof, I am sure that they communicate together for better interactions. I also find myself being able to communicate with them by actions and sign language due to language barrier. I was also able to learn about their living conditions in the orphanage while cleaning up the windows. Although the conditions of their room is not big, I could see that the elderlies were communicating well like neighbours. Through the visit of the orphanage, I was able to hold the value of perseverence. It led me to a strong start and encouraged me to complete my task. I felt uncomfortable while cleaning the windows but the elderlies who talked to us enabled me to look forward to the activities for today.

I can do a part by volunteering for the attendance to the needs of those who are of a poor community. Some of us have opportunities and some of us don't. It might take up a part of our time or schedule but by participating in these activities, we may be able to feel good about ourselves and reflect on how we should appreciate what we have. By having volunteering activities, we would be recognized by others and would even be able to carry the trend of helping people in need.

I feel very glad and appreciative that i have a parent that dotes on me. I am devastated to hear that some of the residents in the orphanage are not actually orphans but they were abandoned by the parents. This is very sad since these children were not abled to be raised due to financial difficulties faced by their parents.

I learn more about the culture in Vietnam and more on how we should not waste food as the food here is the farmer's hardwork. I also learn that i can help out in the society.

I feel that i can help out with the society more. For example, by volunteering more in orphanages in Singapore. Not forgetting, by donating too. By doing so, I will bring joy to all this orphans.

After the visit to the orphanage, i felt that we have to be appreciative towards everything that we have. we also have to appreciate our parents while they're still here with us because being an orphans, we do not have this luxury and the love from our parents. We cannot take things for granted because we have to appreciate of what we have.

I have learnt from this visit that i have to be more appreciative of what i have now and not take things for granted. Always appreciate everything that the people around us for what they have done. I should be more grateful in the future.

After this orphanage visit, i will contribute to my oen country by doing volunteering work such as delivering food to the needies, help them washing their dishes in the kitchen and to pack the food in the container.

All in all, this trip makes me learn how to contribute to the society.
