Day 4 (31/5) - Farming experience at Yen En Duc Farm

We would like to develop our students to be a young community where they work to create, maintain and explore sustainable food systems.

At the vegetable farm, our students learned how to grow vegetables. They learned the process of farming from seasoned Vietnamese farmers. This includes setting up plants in rows and deciding on the garden plan details such as how many rows they need, what size they should be, and how much space they need between them. Farm responsibilities were then allocated to the group members. This was to ensure that each participant had an opportunity to experience growing the vegetables.

Through this farming process, the students will come to understand sustainability through the soils, crops, climate and community in which they work. They will gain the systems-based thinking and farming skills needed to make a positive difference in today’s world.

Physical conditions for planting vegetables in Vietnam:

Climate-It has high rainfall and it aids in watering the plants and the famers have lesser work to do.

Irrigation-It ensures the plants to be in good condition after the famer have watered it.

Type of soil-The soil is fertile as we can see that the other plants are very healthy and are very green.

Fertilizer-The fertilizer used for the soil is natural. They burn the husk of the rice plant to use it as a fertilizer for the plantation.

    Reflection:

Firstly, we created a hole to plant the vegetable in to the soil using a hoe. Next, we cover up the vegetable to anchor it to the soil. We then water the plant and clean up after that.

We learn to persevere while ploughing the soil. Though it was a very warm morning, we continued the planting process and water the plants. We also realised that planting requires a lot of effort and perseverance. With the meagre income which they earned from selling the vegetable, we marvelled at their spirit and determination in this agriculture industry.

From this activity we learnt that we must not waste our food when we are eating as it is hard to plant crops. Therefore i would spread awareness on reducing food waste and encourage others back home to eat only what we can finish.

Physical conditions for planting vegetables in Vietnam:

Temperature - Temperature affects the productivity and growth of a plant depending upon whether the plant variety is a warm-season or cool-season crops. (Lower temperature usually results to slower growth as photosynthesis decreases)

Light - The more sunlight a plant receives, the better capacity it has to produce food through photosynthesis. As the sunlight decreases the photosynthetis process slows down.

Soil condition - It is best to plant on fertile soils as it contains more nutrients needed for the plant to grow. This is the reason why majority of the plantations are located near ponds, rivers or any bodies of water as it (soils) tends to be more fertile.

    Reflection for Vegetable Farming:

First we use the hoe to make the soil loosen and create a small 'hole'. It has to be 15-20cm deep. Then we would put the vegetable in the 'hole' to plant it by covering it with the soil so that it would not move. We put at least 3 to 4 vegetables in each long hole. After we plant every plant, we make sure that it is secure in the soil so that when it is watered , it would not be washed away. We then use the watering can and collect water to water the plants.

We were able to learn how to "farm" and plant vegetables and learnt it through our own practical perspective. I was also able to learn the values of propriety because it takes propriety to do all the farming yourself. We also should not take food for granted as it takes very long (3 months ) to harvest vegetables and fruits.

We should spread awareness and conserve the environment by campaigns and telling people that planting vegetables is different. When we are back in school in Spore , we will organize a farming campaign so that students will be aware of what is happening and if they were to have a garden , they can plant to save the environment.

The physical condition that encourages vegetable production in Vietnam is firstly soil. The reason why all the crops grow healthily is due to the soil. The soil is fertile enough to grow the crops and it's the reason why they are growing well.

Secondly, the climate plays an important role in encouraging vegetable production in Vietnam. The climate in vietnam has high temperature and high rainfall. Therefore, it is good to grow the crops with this kind of climate. The red river is an example that is part of the climate. An example of high temperature is the presence of sunlight. The sunlight plays an important part in growing healthy crops. Temperature is also important because if the weather is very warm, there will not be enough water for the plants. When the crops are dry, the crops will then die.

The presence of irrigation also helps to encourage vegetable production. The water for planting can be taken from the pond nearby through water pipes. Hence, sufficient water is always being ensured for the crops at easy access. Landspace also plays a part because if the land is big, more crops can be planted.

    Reflection:

The first step was to plough the soil. This is to ensure that the fertile soil below is mixed up and combined together. The next step is to dig 15-20cm down. This is so that the saplings can be planted in the most fertile soil. Then, we would cover part of the stalk of the saplings with soil. Lastly we irrigated the soil with a watering can.

The good practices I learnt were that planting any crops is very hard. Even a simple task of ploughing the soil was very back breaking as the sun was blazing. So even though it was just a small patch of soil that we ploughed, it was still extremely tiring. From this, I learned not to waste any food as it is an extremely tiring task.

From this activity, I learned not to waste any food. So when I reach back to Singapore, I would not waste any food and also try to encourage my friends and family members to finish all the food that they bought.

Physical conditions for planting vegetables in Vietnam:

    • temperature: there's sufficient sunlight for the plants.
    • heavy rain: the rain helps by collecting water in the pond and softening the soil.
    • pond (source): it can not only rear the fishes and also the source of water for the plants
    • soil (fertile): the soil is well fertilized without pesticide or other chemicals. which is good for the plants growth
    • no pesticide: the crops harvested will not only be fresh but clean as there are no chemicals used

    Reflection:
We carried out the farming by plowing the soil and dig 20cm down, afterwards we planted the plant in the soil(3/4 in one row),lastly we irrigate the plants. It was a meaningful experience as we do not usually do such activities.

From this, we learnt that we cannot take things for granted and do not waste food because it takes a lot of hard work to plant the food. Thus, we understand that we have to be more appreciative of what we think is easily available for us everyday.

We can teach students the importance of not wasting food and take things for granted. As there is a lot of hard work and sweat put in just to plant the organic plants. Hence, every grain of rice is essential and not to be wasted.

Physical conditions for Vegetable plantation :

    Factor : Fertile Soil
Description : There is an irrigation system near the soil.

    Factor : Water
Description : Water is available nearby

    Factor : Temperature
Description : Suitable temperature for the crops to grow

    Factor : Land Space
Description: The land space was big enough to grow rice

    Factor : Sunlight
    Description : Photosynthesis

    Reflection:
We did ploughing of the fields, planting of the crops and irrigation of the vegetables
We have learnt to put in effort, hard work and perseverance into doing whatever challenges we faced as in farming, we learnt that with time and effort, we would be able to successfully plant the crops even if we failed in ploughing or planting the crops at first. We also learnt teamwork as all of us worked together to do the jobs in turn and to do it efficiently.
From this activity, we learnt not to waste food as we now know how much work is put into growing our daily foodstuffs. We also learnt to not be so fussy about dirt as we went down and dirty when we went to plant the crops. This opportunity has also allowed us to experience the job sector of agriculture, and by exposing us to this experience, we now know more about agricultural practices in different countries and thus has allowed us to know more about the agricultural sector in future jobs
